COMMON THREAD - Liv Enqvist

Inspired by the idea that now more than ever our society needs to identify common threads as we weave new stories. Swedish born artist Liv Enqvist inquires, what is our common thread? What binds us together? Embroidery - a domestic activity – is brought outside and exposed to the sun, wind and water where it becomes a part of the surroundings, blurring the man made and the natural.

The Visible Mending Workshop with artist Liv Enqvist was held in October 2021

Reconnecting with what people already had by mending or improving them in a beautiful way, giving old clothes a new life was the theme to this workshop. Instead of hiding the wear and tear we made it a feature by embracing the history and proudly wear the scars of the lived experiences. Liv Enqvist instructed simple embroidery, boro and darning methods. At Gallery 3 a wonderful group connected with each other for an afternoon of repairing, embroidering, patching and afternoon tea.

Traditional Weaving Workshop
December 2020

WIRED - Nakisha Jamieson

Utilising the debris from telecommunication installation for sculptural poetic responses to our current dilemma of waste, I connect the traditional practice of weaving with the digital thread of modern society and in this way explore the ever-changing urban perspective and the human impact of waste. Through the use of found materials I am examining my identity as an Australian.

Traditional Weaving Workshop with Mirrawinni Gaze and Nakisha Jamieson @ Gallery 3

In December 2020 we gathered in the garden at Gallery 3 for an afternoon of learning traditional weaving techniques under the mentorship of local Indigenous weaver Mirrawinni Gaze and exhibiting artist Nakisha Jamieson. Time disappeared as we connected through the experience of being together and learning different methods of hand weaving using natural fibres from local debris and flora.
