Open Spaces - Fabien Garcia
Other Spaces is an exploration of the landscape by French artist Fabien Garcia. In a surreal manner, he invites us to wander for a moment through those “Other Spaces”. Exploring figuration, Fabien is not scared of breaking from realism when it feels right, using juxtaposition of images and references to attempt to capture an emotion. He believes the act of painting is a play. He aspires to paint with spontaneity, movement, texture and the economy of gesture, seeking the necessary balance for a painting to exist by itself.
This exhibition speaks of environmentalism, melancholy and existentialism. The artist always starts his piece with a picture he took as a reference and works from then without knowing where this memory of this scene will take him. He looks for vibrations or “accidents” that will add depth and energy or a sense of wonder to emotional remembrance.
His focus is the inner experience of those landscapes, resulting in visual expressions between two realms -
experienced reality and dreamlike memory. Floating somewhere between utopia, dystopia or heterotopia, his paintings are surreal spaces, Other Spaces.
How can they be described? What meaning do they hold? Fabien likes to leave interpretation open enough for the viewer to participate.
